The Plan Going Forward - @Sean Fish
- MRG mentors and leads have noticed some alarming trends in team member retention and participation. While changes in meetings may be difficult with the given time left in the semester, we should have a plan for implementing meetings next semester. Concerns include:
- Loss of engagement of new members
- Disconnect between senior and junior members
- Too many meetings… our current meetings to active members ratio is too high
- A need to communicate that MRG should not be the lowest priority in order to make meaningful progress
- Avoid over-committing and avoid a low-priority culture
- We want people to make progress together and have something meaningful to boost their resumes
- Meetings guidance from @Sean Fish
- One main meeting for each project ≤ 1 hour
- The purpose is to know where people are at, and how people within a project can coordinate to help - no delving into technical discussion
- Round table stand-up style, plus a specific agenda
- One main meeting for each discipline working group ≤ 1 hour
- The purpose is to know where people are at, and how people across a discipline can coordinate to help
- This can work as a time for design reviews
- Cancel working group meetings without an agenda (this should be rare)
- All other meetings should be small groups dedicated to subsystems with a more senior lead and 2-3 newer members, scheduled per small group a la Stinger Tug
- MRG mentors would like to be a bit more hands-on going forward in recommending best practices. However, it is not our intention to take over things - rather, occasionally step in and review current practices.
- We’d like to encourage a format for Ops going forward taking a form similar to this one, so we can easily track what has been accomplished, what needs to happen, and what help is needed.
Integrating New Members
- We are at risk of losing Stinger Tug people if we don’t get them on projects
- The Stinger Tug has some fundamental design issues that need to be resolved in the next iteration
- How do we get the new members transferred into the projects? Interact with Stinger Tug people and inquire about their interest.
